Cordyline australis 'Red Star'
£9.50
Cordelynes are a striking, architectural evergreen shrub celebrated for its deep bronze-red, sword-shaped leaves. Native to New Zealand, it is a popular choice for adding a tropical or Mediterranean feel to gardens, patios, and coastal landscapes.
Features a dramatic fountain of arching, dark burgundy foliage. Mature plants may produce fragrant, ivory white flower spikes in summer.
Typically grows to a height of 2.5–4 metres with a spread of 1.5–2.5 metres over 10–20 years.
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. While green varieties love full sun, those with coloured leaves like 'Red Star' often maintain better colour in light shade to avoid fading from scorching rays.
Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant. However, container-grown plants need regular watering during the growing season; always let the top few centimetres of soil dry out before watering again.
In colder weather, move potted plants to a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory or wrap the crown if outside.
