Commonly known as Rose of Sharon.

A striking, deciduous shrub prized for its large, double blooms that appear from late summer into autumn. It is a fully hardy and robust plant, reaching an ultimate height of around 2.5–3 metres and a spread of 1.5–2 metres over 5 to 10 years.

Large, ruffled, double blooms that are white with pink flushing and deep red or crimson centres. As the season progresses, the flowers often take on a deeper pink hue with purple central blotches.

The petals are edible and can be added to fruit salads or infused to make a mild citrus-flavoured tea.

Requires full sun in a warm, sheltered spot to flower well.

Prefers fertile, moist, but well-drained soil. It is tolerant of various soil types.

Prune in early to late spring to remove dead or damaged wood and to maintain shape. Because it flowers on new growth, it can be pruned back hard if needed.
