Bay tree laurel (Laurus nobilis) is a versatile, aromatic Mediterranean evergreen shrub famed for its deep-green, leathery leaves used worldwide in culinary dishes like soups and stews. Known alternatively as sweet bay or true laurel, this hardy plant functions beautifully as an ornamental garden feature, an entry-way topiary, or a dedicated kitchen herb.

You can harvest the aromatic leaves year-round. They can be used fresh or dried over a few weeks to concentrate their flavour for spice racks.

Best in full sun to partial shade. Ensure a sheltered position out of cold, drying winter winds to prevent wind scorch.

Water regularly during the summer growing season. Let the soil dry slightly between waterings, as shallow roots are prone to root rot if waterlogged.

Generally frost-hardy down to -5°C. Container plants should be moved indoors or wrapped in horticultural fleece during severe winter freezes.
